Below is an example (mp3) of what can be achieved in the mastering process.
The track by Petersky, ‘Before Mastering’ is at 0db, this is as loud as it will go distortion free, without mastering.
The track 'After Mastering' is the exact same Petersky track.
As is apparent, the perceived loudness is much greater, but not only louder, the bass in the track is under more control while now having more punch. Also the stereo soundscape is wider with a better overall balance of frequencies and greater clarity.
